Cans for Habitat

Cans for Habitat is a sponsored by The Aluminum Association’s Cans for Causes program and promotes the value of aluminum can recycling. Through Cans for Habitat, aluminum cans are recycled to raise money for Habitat for Humanity to build decent, affordable housing, with low-income families nationwide.

Cans for Habitat raises money, increases awareness of Habitat within the community, builds lists of donors, and gives children a way to become involved with Habitat, all while helping the environment. As an individual, just choose aluminum cans at your local grocery store or beverage vendor. Then collect recycled cans from your community and bring the cans to selected local recycling centers and tell them that the money should go to Habitat for Humanity-Greater Columbus. The money earned can then be used to build homes for families in need!

5 Easy Steps to get involved with Cans for Habitat!

Gather aluminum cans (you can do this personally, or by contacting business, schools, etc. and asking to pick-up their cans for them in support of Habitat for Humanity-Greater Columbus).
Set up a pick-up and drop-off schedule to transport the cans from the location where the cans are collected to one of the recycling centers that has partnered with Habitat for Humanity-Greater Columbus. Assign a specific person to this task, who will be available to pick-up and drop-off every week (or as often as needed).
When a significant amount of cans has accumulated, the person assigned to the pick-up/drop-off task should take all aluminum cans to one of the selected recycling centers.
Tell the Recycling Center that you are dropping off cans for Habitat for Humanity-Greater Columbus, and they will put the receipt for your cans in Habitat’s account.

Recycling 40 aluminum beverage cans has the energy saving equivalent of one gallon of gasoline. Last year, Americans recycled enough aluminum cans to conserve the energy equivalent of more than 15 million barrels of oil.
Aluminum is the most recyclable of all materials. One hundred percent of a can ends up as another can in as little as 60 days.
