Faith Relations

Habitat for Humanity is a non-profit ecumenical Christian housing ministry that encourages people of all faiths to work together to eradicate substandard housing. Being involved with Habitat for Humanity-Greater Columbus (HFHGC) is a wonderful way for congregations to put their faith into action.

Habitat’s mission is derived from the concept of what Milliard Fuller, Habitat founder, called the Theology of the Hammer, which is the idea that people of all different faiths, ideologies, and backgrounds are welcome to participate in Habitat’s work. People may disagree on religious, political, or philosophical issues, but Habitat is a place to lay differences aside, pick up a hammer, and help make a difference in someone’s life.

Faith partnerships play a critical role in the success of Habitat for Humanity-Greater Columbus.

Congregations can spread the word about the numerous opportunities available for individuals, small groups, and the entire congregation to participate in the Habitat for Humanity-Greater Columbus program.

  • Pray for the volunteers, staff, and new homeowners.
  • Invite a member of our Speaker’s Bureau to share the Habitat story.
  • Encourage your congregation to volunteer as individuals or as a group.
  • Use Habitat for Humanity’s material for your Sunday School, Vacation Bible School curriculum or small group.
  • Publicize Habitat’s ReStore. Habitat’s ReStore is a home improvement retail store open to the entire community.
  • Take up a special collection during a worship service.
  • Sponsor or co-sponsor a house.

Theology of the Hammer:

Hammer“We may disagree on all sorts of things—baptism, communion, what night to have a prayer meeting and how the preacher should dress. But, thank God we can agree on a nail, and the use of the hammer as an instrument to manifest God’s love.”

–Millard Fuller, Founder, Habitat for Humanity International
