Although Habitat for Humanity's work is primarily accomplished at the community or "grassroots" level by affiliates such as Habitat for Humanity-Greater Columbus (HFHGC), its policies and mission are managed by an ecumenical, international board of directors at Habitat for Humanity International (HFHI) headquarters. HFHI is truly a global organization that has built homes for more than 1.5 million people in more than 3,000 communities with safe, decent, affordable shelter. HFHI's operational headquarters, located in Americus, Georgia, and its administrative headquarters, located in Atlanta, Georgia, provide information, training, and a variety of other support services to Habitat affiliates worldwide. All Habitat affiliates are asked to "tithe" to HFHI—to give a percentage of their unrestricted contributions to fund house-building work in other nations. Tithing provides much-needed funds for international building, and it also gives affiliates the opportunity to demonstrate the spirit of Christian partnership. In 2008, U.S. affiliates tithed $15 million to support Habitat's work overseas; and the Greater Columbus Affiliate has sent more than $396,000 to developing countries which helped to build 230 homes as part of this program.

HFHI’s Global Village trips program offers participants the unique opportunity to become active partners with people of other cultures. Teams work alongside members of the host community and get to know the indigenous culture in ways very few can. Global Village volunteers participate in local cultural activities, help raise awareness of the burden of poverty housing and, of course, further Habitat’s mission to build decent, affordable housing worldwide.
